“My Outlook doesn’t work with Intermedia anymore.”
We hear this a lot, and it’s exactly what a customer in Alexandria told us when he called. The truth is that Intermedia Hosted Exchange still works in classic Outlook, but it does not work in the new Outlook that Microsoft now ships on most new PCs and pushes through updates. If Outlook suddenly looks different and your Intermedia email won’t connect, that’s almost certainly why, and it’s fixable, usually in under an hour.
Classic Outlook vs. New Outlook: What Changed?
Microsoft is replacing the long-standing desktop Outlook (“classic Outlook”) with a new, web-based app simply called “new Outlook.” The new app is built around Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Gmail and a few other account types. Third-party hosted Exchange providers like Intermedia aren’t supported the way they were in classic Outlook.
The result: after an update or a new PC setup, Outlook opens in the new look, your Intermedia account can’t be added, and it feels like your email is broken.
Other features behave differently in new Outlook too. For example, the “You are not responding to the latest message in this conversation” warning is gone. Our guide to that Outlook warning explains what it means and what to do in new Outlook.
Is My Email Gone?
Almost certainly not. Your mail lives on Intermedia’s servers, not in the Outlook app. If you can still sign in to Intermedia’s webmail (Outlook on the web), your data is safe. The problem is only the connection between the desktop app and the server.
Your Options
- Switch back to classic Outlook. For many people this is the quickest fix. It works today, but Microsoft has made clear that classic Outlook is being phased out, so it’s a short-term answer.
- Use Outlook on the web. Fine as a stopgap, but not great if you rely on offline access, desktop add-ins, or a full calendar and contact workflow.
- Move to Microsoft 365. This solves the problem for good. Your account works in classic Outlook, new Outlook, and on your phone.
Do I Have to Move to Microsoft 365?
Not always. Classic Outlook still works with Intermedia for many businesses. But if you’re stuck like our Alexandria customer was, or your team is being moved to new Outlook, a move to Microsoft 365 solves the problem for good, and we can bring your email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes with you.
Real Client Story: Rebuilding a Mailbox When Outlook Couldn’t Connect
When a customer in Alexandria called us, Outlook on his PC could no longer connect to his Intermedia email. He could still sign in to Intermedia’s webmail (Outlook on the web), so his data was safe on the server, but he had no working desktop copy and no clean way to move it anywhere.
Instead of waiting days on a vendor ticket or paying for a costly migration tool, Computer Help SOS used Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant, to build a custom process that pulled his mailbox out through Outlook on the web and reassembled it into a complete Outlook data file (PST), including his email, calendar, tasks, and notes.
We then moved him to Microsoft 365 and imported that PST into his new mailbox. Everything came across: years of email, his calendar appointments, tasks, and notes. As a bonus, his account now works in both classic Outlook and the new Outlook, on his PC and his phone, with no more connection headaches.
It’s the kind of problem that doesn’t have a “click here to fix” button. We combine hands-on IT experience with AI-assisted tooling to solve it anyway.
